Olefins

Injection Molding Resin: Olefins

Thermoplastic olefins, also known as TPOs or olefinic thermoplastic elastomers, are a group of polymer-blend materials. Generally, TPOs consist of a mix of a thermoplastic (such as polypropylene, polyethylene, etc.), an elastomer or rubber (such as EPDM, EPR, etc.), and some sort of filler (ranging from talc to carbon fiber to metal oxy sulfate). Because there are so many possible formulations, olefins are a very versatile group of thermoplastics that find use in countless applications.

Properties of TPOs and Olefins

Because their chemical compositions can vary so greatly, the properties of thermoplastic olefins can vary greatly, as well. However, most olefin materials exhibit some or all of the following:

  • High stiffness
  • High impact resistance
  • Excellent dimensional stability
  • Low coefficient of thermal expansion
  • Good flexibility
  • Excellent weather resistance
  • Good tear strength
  • UV resistant
  • Lightweight
